まずは、ルビー先生の英会話の授業についてお伺いします。具体的に、どんなことをする授業なんでしょうか？
普段の授業風景がイメージできるよう、詳しく教えていただけますか？

In my English conversation class, the main goal is to help students get used to actually speaking English. Instead of just memorizing vocabulary or grammar, we spend a lot of time talking in pairs or small groups. We do role-plays, short interviews, and activities where students use English in real-life situations—like talking about their weekend plans or recommending a movie.
英会話の授業では、「実際に英語で話すこと」に慣れることが一番の目標です。単語や文法を覚えるだけでなく、ペアワークや少人数グループでたくさん話す時間をとっています。ロールプレイやインタビューの中で週末の予定を話したり、映画をおすすめしたりと、日常に近い場面で英語を使う活動を行っています。

たしかに、教科書とにらめっこするばかりじゃなくて、友達と英語で会話したり、積極的に発言したりする時間が多いですよね！ そのおかげで、英語を話すことへの抵抗感が少なくなった気がします。ルビー先生は、中学３年生の英語ライティングの授業もご担当ですよね。

In the writing class, students learn how to express their own ideas and experiences clearly in English. We begin with simple, complete sentences and gradually build up to writing full paragraphs and 100-word essays. Throughout the course, students put their grammar knowledge into practical use, which helps reinforce what they’ve already learned. Actively using the language makes it easier to remember and internalize.

An important part of the class is revision. Students are encouraged to look closely at their own writing, find mistakes, and make improvements. This process not only helps them write more accurately, but also builds their awareness of how English works. After receiving feedback, students are encouraged to revise their work. Over time, they gain more confidence and become more thoughtful in how they should express themselves in English.

ライティングの授業では、生徒たちが自分の考えや経験を英語でわかりやすく表現する力を身につけていきます。最初はシンプルな文から始め、少しずつ段落のある文章や100語程度のエッセイへと発展させていきます。授業を通して、これまでに学んだ文法を文章に使うことで、知識の定着を図ります。英語を実際に使うことで、より深く理解し、自然に身につけることができます。

この授業で特に大切にしているのが「文章を磨く」ことです。生徒自身が自分の文章をよく読み直し、間違いを見つけて修正する力を育てます。このプロセスを通して、文法の正確さだけでなく、「英語とはどういう言語なのか」という意識も高まります。フィードバックを受けた後は、何度も文章を改善していきます。こうした積み重ねにより、生徒たちは自信を持って、自分の言葉で英語を使えるようになっていきます。

日本の中学生・高校生に英語を教えるときに、ルビー先生が特に大切にしていることは何ですか？ 文化的な背景なども踏まえて、意識されていることがあれば教えてください。

My journey actually began when I was a student learning Japanese. It was such a fun and eye-opening experience that I realized how powerful and practical it is to be able to speak another language. That experience made me feel that language isn’t just a subject to study, but a real-life skill that connects people.

I also grew up in a bilingual, multicultural environment, so I’ve always believed that everyone should be able to speak at least two languages. It opens your mind, helps you understand other people, and gives you more opportunities in life.

Now, as a teacher, I hope to help my students make the same discoveries I did. Language can be exciting, empowering, and full of possibility. I love watching students gain confidence and find their own voice in English. It’s rewarding to guide them through that process and to make learning feel fun and meaningful.

私のきっかけは、実は学生時代に日本語を学んだ経験からなんです。とても楽しくて、新しい世界が広がったように感じました。「外国語を話せるようになることって、生活の中で役立つ力なんだ」と実感しました。それ以来、語学はただの教科ではなく、人と人をつなぐスキルだと思うようになりました。

私はバイリンガルで多文化的な環境で育ったので、「2つの言語を話せること」は誰にとっても大切だと感じています。外国語が話せると、視野が広がり、人の気持ちがより理解できるようになり、より多くの機会に恵まれると思います。

そして今は、私自身が感じたように、「外国語を学ぶことって楽しい」「自分の世界が広がる」と生徒たちにも実感してほしいと思っています。英語を通して自信をつけ、自分の考えを表現できるようになる姿を見るのは本当にうれしいです。学ぶことが楽しく、意味のあるものになるように、日々工夫しながら教えています。

ルビー先生から見て、帝塚山中学校・高等学校の生徒たちはどんな印象ですか？ 生徒たちの特徴や、日々の成長を感じる瞬間などがあれば教えてください。

Tezukayama students are very curious and motivated. They try hard to get good grades and they’re truly interested in exploring new topics and challenging themselves. Their honest and respectful nature makes the classroom a very safe and engaging space for everyone. I’m especially impressed by how energetic and cooperative they are. Whether we’re working on a group project or just having a free conversation, they work together seamlessly and bring a positive, vibrant energy to every lesson. I really enjoy watching them grow more confident and express their own thoughts freely in English.

帝塚山の生徒たちは、とても好奇心旺盛で意欲的です。良い成績を取るために努力することはもちろん、新しいトピックを探求したり、自分自身に挑戦したりすることにも心から関心を持っています。

また、正直で礼儀正しいため、教室が誰もが安心して積極的に参加できる、とても良い空間になっています。特に、彼らのエネルギッシュで協力的な姿勢にはいつも感心させられます。グループで課題に取り組むときも、自由に英会話を楽しむときも、彼らはスムーズに協力し、授業に前向きで活気あるエネルギーをもたらしてくれます。生徒たちが自信をつけ、英語で自分の考えを自由に表現できるようになるのを見るのが、本当に楽しいです。

最後に、英語にちょっと苦手意識がある人や、これから英語学習を始める人に向けて、ルビー先生から温かいアドバイスをお願いします！

My biggest piece of advice is to be brave and not to be afraid of making mistakes. Real growth comes from overcoming failures, so you have to be open to them. The more you try, the more you’ll learn, even if you don’t get it right the first time.

Also, try to find a way to make English fun for you. Watch your favorite movies or anime in English, listen to your favorite songs, or read a book you love. When you connect English to something you’re passionate about, it becomes a lot more enjoyable to learn.

私から一つアドバイスするとしたら、勇気を出して、間違いを恐れないことです。本当の成長は、失敗を乗り越えることから生まれます。だからこそ、失敗を恐れず、むしろ前向きに受け入れてみてください。最初から完璧にできなくても、挑戦するほど学びは深まります。

それから、自分にとって英語が楽しくなる方法を見つけることも大切です。好きな映画やアニメを英語で見たり、お気に入りの曲を聴いたり、好きな本を英語で読んでみたり。自分が夢中になれることと英語を結びつけると、学習はぐっと楽しくなりますよ。
